Why It Works

Why It Works

How amazing machines really work, from dams to robots.

Short vertical videos about true engineering stories from every era, from the Hoover Dam to this year's robots: the one clever idea inside each machine, shown on the real thing. And Why It Failed: the true stories of when it went wrong, and the one part that broke.

How the videos are made

A personal tool, run by one person, makes and posts the videos. It is not a service for the public and has no sign-up. It picks a story, checks every fact against a source, writes and voices a script, builds the video and runs quality checks, then posts it to the owner's own accounts. The script and voice are made with AI tools; the facts come from the sources.

Where the film comes from

Film and pictures come from public archives (NASA, the Library of Congress, the U.S. National Archives, Wikimedia Commons, the Internet Archive), from openly licensed work, and from companies' and agencies' own press material. Each is credited on screen. None of them endorse these videos.
